Common questions
How do I add someone who isn't on Split Happy yet?
Add them by name and they become a placeholder in the group right away; you can log expenses against them immediately. When you invite them by email or share a join link, their whole history merges into their account the moment they join. Nothing has to be re-entered.
Why does my balance differ from what I expected?
Split Happy nets debts across all of your shared groups by default, so if you owe someone in one group and they owe you in another, the amounts cancel out and you settle once. If you'd rather see the raw amount between each pair, turn off debt simplification in the group's options.
How do I record a payment?
Open Balances, choose Settle Up, and enter what was paid. You can also hand off to Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App from there; Split Happy records the settlement either way. For a large amount, a payment plan splits it into installments everyone in the group can see.
Does it work offline?
Yes. You can add expenses and read balances without a connection; everything syncs when you're back online.
Someone left the group: what happens to their expenses?
The history stays intact. A departing member becomes a placeholder so past expenses and balances still add up correctly for everyone else.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Profile → Delete account. You can also start it from splithappy.us/delete-account. Deleting removes your account and personal data; expenses you shared with others remain in their groups so their balances stay correct.
Privacy
What we collect and why is written out in plain language in the privacy policy, which describes what the app actually does rather than generic boilerplate.
Reporting a bug
Email us with what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. Your device model and OS version help. If the app crashed, say roughly when; crash reports are collected automatically and the timing makes yours much easier to find.
